How to Spot Rental Scams in Kigali (and How to Avoid Them)

Fake listings, fake landlords, deposit theft — the most common Kigali rental scams in 2026 and the exact red flags to watch for.

Rental scams are common on WhatsApp and social-media listings. Here are the five patterns we see most on Kigali rentals, and how to avoid them.

1. The "send a deposit before viewing" scam

Never wire money before seeing the place in person. A real landlord will always let you visit first.

2. Stolen photos

Scammers grab photos from Airbnb or older listings. Reverse-image-search any photo that looks too polished. On Umutuzo, every photo is captured by an agent on-site.

3. The "I'm abroad, my agent will handle it" landlord

Classic. The "agent" wants Mobile Money up front and disappears. Always meet the actual owner or a verified, registered agent.

4. Lease without ID

Refuse to sign a lease unless you've seen the landlord's national ID and proof of ownership (a land title or rental authorization). It's normal to ask.

5. The "double-booked" deposit

Scammer collects deposits from multiple people for the same listing. Pay the deposit only at lease-signing, in person, with a receipt.

Umutuzo verifies every listing in person before it goes live and processes payments through Mobile Money with receipts. Browse verified rentals →
